The top 5 standalone stories in fandom
In honor of Skyfall’s recent release, we here at the Dot took the time to contemplate where it fit on the scale of epic film franchises that cultivate recurring fanwork-based fandoms, or standalone entities that usually die out over time. The answer seems to be that it’s somewhere in the middle.
Even though the Bond fandom is a perennial favorite with fans the world over, because it continually reboots and recasts the characters, Skyfall itself is functioning more like a standalone story, as fans dive into the fandom without ever having seen the previous films, read the books, and so on.
It’s pretty unusual for a standalone story to generate a powerful fanbase, especially one that lasts for years—if only because the commercialization of the work usually creates a demand for a sequel. Most successful fanbases arise around literary, television, or film series, as well as the many writers and directors whose fanbases are directed at them. Even entities like Disney can have their own fanbase.
But a single story? That’s rare. Let’s take a look at the stories that have managed to create thriving and creative fanwork-producing fandoms over the years, all on the strength of one well-spun original tale.
Is there a recurring theme among this list? Surprisingly, yes—and it’s one you’d never expect.
1) Pride and Prejudice
“She is tolerable, I suppose, but not handsome enough to tempt me.”
More famous last words were never spoken, quite literally in this case. The direct precursor of thousands upon thousands of romantic comedy and love/hate tropes, Jane Austen’s social satire had an unexpected side effect in launching two centuries full of fanwork written either in direct homage to it or as direct sequels and expansions of it.
Currently, there are certain small presses devoted entirely to the production of Pride and Prejudice sequels, and Jane Austen fanfic is so popular it even has its own acronym: JAFF. The famous, feisty love story of Elizabeth and Darcy turns 200 next year and shows no sign of letting up: The recent appearance of Darcy on the modern webseries remake The Lizzie Bennet Diaries has racked up 280,000 views in the last two weeks alone.

2) House of Leaves
Though it’s hardly ever considered along with other fanwork-based fandom, the fans of House of Leaves have been just as busy churning out inspired creations in response to Mark Danielewski’s sprawling postmodern masterpiece of metafiction and horror. Fans of the epic novel within a novel about a film about a terrifying house have produced endless theory and analysis about the work and all its hidden codes and allegories, along with movie trailers, fanart, mind maps, animations, labyrinths, fanvids, audio recordings, endless amounts of body art, and arguably an entire genre of Internet horror—creepypasta—which often functions as a direct homage to the endless creepiness of the house itself.
The House of Leaves forum has over 36,000 members, who still actively post every day, 12 years after the book’s publication, trying to decipher its endless maze of words.

Im promoting this fic because IT NEEDS MORE HITS. GO READ. I SWEAR YOU WONT REGRET.

After Heaven on Earth becomes real and the Apocalypse goes as angels had planned, Jimmy Novak finds himself in control of his own body again and seemingly the only real human left in a world where the climate has changed, ghost towns are the norm and time flows strangely. The fact that since he wakes up, and for the entire following year, he keeps on hearing Castiel’s voice inside his head is probably just proof that he’s going crazy.

I spend my valentine watching the end of season 2 of Supernatural with my best friend.

We cried, held hands and stared at nothingness while the feelings of all the fuckery that happens in the last two fucking episodes sank in.

I think I can say after season 4, season 2 is my favorite.

Season 1 didnt have as much plot, with the monster of the week deal making it a little dull to watch continuously. Instead, season 2 mantains the concept of monster of the week but STILL manages to develop the characters, constructs a bigger plot and I believe it has way more sophisticated endings. Its not just the cut and dry monster= evil Winchesters kill monster, end of story. It has more depth than that, and they SHOW you that! Madison, the bank episode, the whole Sam being possesed thing.

And also, the episode where they start believing they are hunting an angel! UNF. SO MUCH FEELINGS. SO MUCH FORESHADOWING. SAM BELIEVING, DEAN DONT. SAÑDJSALDKJASLDKJ MY HEART. BOYS STOP BREAKING IT.

I also love SO MUCH how they deal with the consequences of being hunters. Of course Dean and Sam dont get a free pass, the police is after them, the freaking FBI. HENDRIKSEN. I LOVE HIM OKAY. How professional and GOOD hes at his job. (And of course KNOWING what would happen to him later on.)

And of course THE ENDING. The whole plot about the special children! And Ava, Andy, ASH. Seriously! HOW CAN YOU PACK SO MUCH SHIT IN TWO HOURS. IT WAS EPIC OKAY.

It hurts when they die and that is AMAZING. Because it means the writers are doing their jobs! When you give a character enough depth and personality to make it not likable no, but relatable, make it stand on his own. You even feel sorry for the evil ones, like the soldier who kills Sam or Ava or even MEG!

And this has become a rant but, man! That season was incredible.

And you know what the sad part is? The fact that this reminds me so much of what is missing on this season. The Winchesters are free to do virtually anything, they can evade the law easily, they can evade the leviathans, they have lost EVERYTHING they have been fighting for. And the side characters that are introduced feel like cardboard dolls, no depth, close to no personality, either too evil or not enough time to introduce them properly and with characterization all over the place.

And the deaths. Im sorry but with all the boys have lost, somethings gotta give. It doesnt feel believable that shit hasnt hit the fan already, it feels like the writers are putting it off, the eventual explosion that is bound to happen.

The story isnt fluid, nothing gets resolved, or they resolve it by KILLING the loose ends, which feels like sloppy writing and it saddens me so, so much to see such a good show be reduced to this.

Which brings me to the conclusion that I dont think Im going to keep watching if there is another season. I dont know. So far I dont feel compelled to.

What I feel like right now is to grab my box set and cuddle under the sheets until I forget season 6 and 7. Thats it.

She just came up to me and proclaimed to hate the new movie of Star Trek (2009), why? Because Urahara/Spock made no sense.

  • Spock is a VULCAN. Who shows NO EMOTIONS.
  • Urahara is a woman on her own, giving her a ‘love interest’ because every movie must have one was ridiculous…
  • and anyways if there was a relationship going on on the ship, it was Spock/Kirk with Mcoy being the intermediary when things get too out of hand.

SHE. JUST. TOLD ME THAT.

Then it hits me, this isnt the first time, this has occured before:

OTHER PAIRINGS MY MOTHER HAD SAID WERE TOTALLY GAY FOR EACHOTHER:

  1. Sherlock The books (because -and Im quoting- “There were victorian times and they were two guys living together, YOURE NOT FOOLING ANYONE SWEETHEARTS” Me: But mom, John gets married. Mom: Is this after Sherlock dies? Me:…yes? Mom: THEN YOU KNOW THE REASON.)
  2. Sherlock BBC (“Yeah right, Sherlock, youre going to John’s date ‘Because of the case’!” Commentary on Episode 1x02)
  3. Supernatural (“Wait, are they brothers? Look they dont look alike so dont look at me that way.”)
  4. Torchwood (Okay she didnt got to the part where Jack ends up with Ianto -the show canceled over here!-, but she was really proud of a show making a main gay character right.)
  5. Glee (“Right now, Im just watching for Kurt and Blaine relationship. Is like they are the only ones sane. Also THE SONGS THEY CHOOSE SYL LSAKDJALSKDJASLKJ”)

So, I was thinking about BBC Sherlock fandom’s hate-on for Sally Donovan, and just earlier today I was talking with Maria about Tara Thorton’s shitty treatment in True Blood.

And then I made myself a list.

You’re not fooling anyone, fandom. I know what’s up.

They want these women to be invisible and get upset when they’re not. Then they’re bitches, sexless (i.e. no chemistry with ANYONE), or sluts. And it’s not like the show writers don’t have the same problem, those tropes are a consistent fallback when it comes to any major characterization of black female characters. But when they step out of those tropes (Bonnie becoming more assertive, not just a support system for the white female lead; Martha wanting the Doctor to see her in a romantic way, not just as a support system for the white lead; Gwen being the LOVE object of several male characters, not just a support system for the white lead)  fandom goes apeshit cause their worldview is being messed with. These women are not supposed to be important, loved, complicated in their minds, just easily forgotten once the episode is over.

I havent noticed this before but, can I say that I didnt know the fandom disliked Tara this season? Tara in this last season was one of the FEW things I liked; and this is comming from someone who couldnt stand her the first three seasons. I think Tara in the 4th season finally grow a back bone and started to stand up to all the bullshit that Bon Temps threw at her. She wasnt just sitting and whinning to any one who decided to listen, she was actually DOING something to solve her crazy life troubles; she was over her childish infatuation to Jason, she was in a sort of stable relationship AND SHE STOOD UP TO PAM FOR GODSAKE!

In regard of Cassie, despite that I dont ship her with Dean (Dean and Cas share a more profound bond so it could never work) I think she has mad chemistry with Dean and her character felt like a kind of woman who could put up with Dean’s bouts of low self-esteem and no chick-flick moments policy. I could see it happening even more than Lisa/Dean, anyways so I would love to see her character developed on the show.

Donovan only receives hate because she has always been against Sherlock doing HER work (quite rightly so), so shes the first one to doubt him and the one that help in the donwfall of Sherlock. But all in all I cant see what this has to do with her race?

One that does bother me is Mercedez, she has great voice, but she doesnt get solos; AND even Mike and Tina have had an episode dedicated to explain subplot involving them and she hasnt? Why? I havent seen this past season (because it was terrible, I know it, I see it on Tumblr), but I would have liked to see where it would go with her and that guy that asked her out that was on the football team. Or something, ANYTHING. Really.
