Cas: “So you think this was your fault?”People talk about how they’ll never be over the hug and the “I need you,” but you know what I’ll never get over? Dean’s face when Cas lets go. He just looks shattered, like he had everything he’d ever wanted only to have someone snatch it away without telling him why. It’s not the same as when Cas betrayed him, or when Cas died even- it’s a look of pure incomprehension right as the pain hits. With one action Cas reduced this hardened, bloody warrior into a little boy, lost and confused, and the only time I can think of when Dean fully shows us that part of him is when he’s overwhelmed in an insane asylum. It’s no wonder Dean reworked this memory, because there can be no doubt that this is one of the most painful moments in his pain-filled life.
What I’ll never get over is that Dean’s subconcious decided it would rather have the endless torture and nightmares of believing that he was at fault (and the subsequent agonies of self-denial when he couldn’t deal with the guilt anymore) than believe that Cas would want to leave him.
